‘A great deal of pain’: How a tattoo saved a life

I first met John McPherson in 1996 when I was 12 and he was working in the fashion industry in Sydney, Australia.

In his spare time, John had been taking up boxing, and after a couple of fights with his best friend I got the idea of getting a tattoo of my face.

“When I got a tattoo I was really happy and proud,” he says.

“It was just a simple, simple tattoo that says ‘I love you’, and it was like a little message.”

He was lucky, because John’s tattoo became a permanent part of his body.

“For years after that I had no idea how big of an impact it had,” he said.

When you get a tattoo it’s a really good thing to have, it’s like a badge of honour.”
